What to Expect from your Hair Transplant

Newcastle Trichologist

When it comes to your health and youth, you may take it for granted, especially if you notice that one day, they have gone. Hair transplants help to bring back a fuller head of hair, if you’re thinning or going bald and it bothers you, this procedure is a way to help you to feel more confident about your looks, but can also help many people to feel better in themselves.

Types of Hair Transplants

A hair transplant is surgery that will move hair that you already have to an area where the hair is thin or there isn’t any. Hair transplant techniques have changed an advanced over the years and they’re now seen as a fairly common procedure. There are two types of hair transplants, this includes FUT and FUE.

FUT and FUE Hair Transplant Procedure

FUT – Follicular Unit Transfer is one of the 2 primary methods of obtaining follicular units (naturally occuring groups of 1 – 4 hairs) for Hair Transplantation. The Alternative method is Follicular Unit Extraction, more commonly referred to as FUE. The significance of FUT is how the Follicular Units are obtained. FUT surgeons isolate a narrow strip of scalp tissue rich with follicles and remove the narrow strip of scalp directly which is closed immediately after with a suture specifically designed for this type of procedure known as a trichophytic closure. There are lots of surgeons within the world that practise FUT, however to this day there are still extremely few surgeons and practices which have mastered Follicular Unit Transfer because the procedure takes considerable dedication to care, artistic ability and diligence, something we are proud to enforce with our surgeons and advocate to our patients.

FUE – Follicular Unit Extraction is one of the 2 primary methods of obtaining follicular units (naturally occuring groups of 1 – 4 hairs) for Hair Transplantation. The Alternative method is FUT, more commonly referred to as strip harvesting. The significance of FUE is how the Follicular Units are obtained. FUE surgeons primary tool is referred to as a Micro Punch, a circular surgical blade that varies in diameter from 0.7mm to 1.25mm. The Micro Punch enables the Follicular Units to be individually excised from the scalp, with no discomfort and without leaving the patient with a linear scar. There are still extremely few surgeons and practices which have mastered Follicular Unit Extraction because the procedure takes considerable time, expense and education to develop the ability to a superior standard. Something we at FUE Clinics are fortunate enough to be able to provide to all our patients.

The Recovery Process

FUT and FUE hair transplants can take many hours or in some cases days to complete, this will all depend on the size of the procedure that you need, you will also be able to go home on the same day of the surgical procedure. Once your surgery has been complete, your surgeon will remove the bandages and the area that has been transplanted may be swollen, your surgeon can inject triamcinolone into the area and this will help to keep the swelling down. After the surgery and over the days after, you may feel pain or soreness in the transplanted area where your hair has been taken from. Your surgeon may recommend a number of things, this includes pain medications such as Ibuprofen, Antibiotics can help to prevent the area getting infected, Anti-inflammatories such as oral steroids can help to relieve the swelling and medications include Finasteride (Propecia) or Minoxidil (Rogaine), all which will help to stimulate hair growth.

Results

All FUE hair transplants are long-lasting and once you’ve had your hair transplant you will notice that your hair may start to shed after a couple of weeks. There’s no need to worry as this is a completely normal part of the procedure and your hair will grow back strong and healthy. You will also see your hair transplant results developing in 3-6 months, it’s also important to remember that hair transplants don’t work for everyone, but at FUE Clinics we aim to help you to get the best results. Hair transplants tend to be used to help restore your hair, especially if your hair is balding or thinning or you have lost your hair because of an injury.

How Much does a Hair Transplant Cost

The cost of a hair transplant varies from one patient to another and will depend on the individual’s needs and requirements. It’s usually impossible to determine the cost of a hair transplant without a consultation with one of our specialists. When it comes to properly determining the true cost of a hair transplant, at FUE Clinics we will first need to determine if this form of treatment is going to be the best option for you. We then need to carry out an assessment and consider the extent of your hair thinning or loss, the size of the area that requires treatment and also what is going to be the best method of hair transplant for you. Only then will you be able to definitively offer a cost for the treatment.
