Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) is a refinement of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Grafts are taken one by one from the donor area in the same way, then placed straight into the scalp with a fine implanter pen, rather than into channels opened beforehand. This gives the surgeon close control over the angle, direction and depth of every hair, which is why DHI is often chosen for hairlines and for adding density among existing hair. What Is a DHI Hair Transplant?
DHI stands for Direct Hair Implantation. It is a form of FUE in which the extracted grafts are implanted straight into the scalp with a specialised implanter pen, instead of being placed into incisions made in a separate earlier step. The donor area is harvested in the same way as FUE, so the main difference is in how the grafts are placed.
DHI or FUE: What Is the Difference?
With standard FUE, the surgeon first opens small recipient channels and the grafts are then placed into them. With DHI, the implanter pen creates the opening and places the graft at the same time. DHI gives very fine control over angle and depth and suits hairlines and adding density to thinning areas. Standard FUE can be quicker for large areas needing many grafts. Both leave tiny dot scars in the donor area rather than a linear scar.
Who Is a Good Candidate for DHI?
You may be suitable for DHI if you have a receding or thinning hairline, thinning in areas where you still have some hair, or you want to refine a previous transplant. What Are the Limitations of DHI?
DHI is slower and more exacting than standard FUE, so fewer grafts may be placed in a single session, and it is not always the best choice for very large areas of baldness. As with any hair transplant, results take time: transplanted hair usually sheds in the first few weeks, and new growth develops over the following months.
